On Sunday, Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson announced his resignation after his ruling party, the Progressive Party, had it’s number of seats voted down from 19 to 8 in the nationwide election.

Coming in second behind the Independence Party, was the anti-establishment Pirate Party, who gained 7 seats in the election. They now hold 10 seats in Parliament and are looking to make an even bigger splash in the pond.

The Pirate Party of Iceland was formed in 2012 by Birgitta Jónsdóttir and other internet activists, who push for internet neutrality and privacy, supports crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, a massive change in copyright laws which legalizes internet file-sharing, non-violence, complete transparency, open-source communication and other open-source methods, which produces a free-flow of information sharing. This movement is seen as being directly opposed to the goals and plans of the banking and political elite.

The Pirate Party has also voiced support for offering asylum to whistle-blowers like Edward Snowden, although the bill which was proposed in July of 2013, did not receive enough support. However, more than three years later and with even more public support and now triple the amount of Parliament seats, such a bill might receive enough support this time around if it is once again proposed.

“We are a platform for young people, for progressive people who shape and reshape our society. Like Robin Hood, because Robin Hood was a pirate, we want to take the power from the powerful to give it to the people,” said Birgitta Jónsdóttir.

For Iceland though, this isn’t all that shocking of news to see that a revolutionary, anti-establishment party has gained such popularity. Looking back at 2008 when the global stock market took a big dive, banks in the U.S. and throughout Europe were bailed out and forced the people of those countries to bear the economic burdens such measures created. In Iceland however, they decided to arrest and jail their bankers for creating the financial crises and instead, the people were bailed out financially.

Former President Olafur Ragnar Grimmson said in 2013:

“Why are the banks considered to be the holy churches of the modern economy? Why are private banks not like airlines and telecommunication companies and allowed to go bankrupt if they have been run in an irresponsible way? The theory that you have to bail out banks is a theory that you allow bankers enjoy for their own profit, their success, and then let ordinary people bear their failure through taxes and austerity. People in enlightened democracies are not going to accept that in the long run.”

Perhaps the people of the United States and European Union should take note of what has happened and the success such measures have created. As Grimmson said, why is it that banks get to play around with billions and trillions of dollars with no repercussions?

The trend is growing and building as the Pirate Party has been established in over 40 countries, including Sweden, Germany, France, Iceland, Austria, Australia, Greece, Spain and the United Kingdom, among others.

The Pirate Party movement started in Sweden in 2006 by Richard Falkvinge, who was protesting Sweden’s debate over changes to copyright laws. Three years later, the Swedish Pirate Party got over 220,000 votes in the elections and gained two seats in Parliament. The campaign funds they spent was less than 1% of what the competition spent and was so successful because of their open-source methods of spreading the word about the Party and it’s goals. Richard then went on to write a book called Swarmwise, which can also be viewed here in pdf format.

The revolution of humanity is continuing full speed ahead. The Pirate Party is part of the solution. Iceland once again is taking the lead in massive progressive and positive change for the world. Share the news with your friends and family. Great things are happening in our world.
