What if the secret to losing weight sustainably, healing from debilitating diseases, and cultivating more self-confidence was to eat more fruit? The sweet, luscious flesh of plants is what 33-year-old Rebecca Rosenberg claims helped her lose 80 pounds, heal from a disease that left one side of her body biconnected from the brain and clear up her acne.
In 2014, Rosenberg was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The Austin, Texas, resident thought it was the end of the line for her, considering she was obese and riddled with unexplained sickness and fatigue. Said Rosenberg on the MS diagnosis: “I woke up in the hospital one morning and the left side of my body, from my neck down, didn’t connect to my brain. I couldn’t use my arm or leg. It was terrifying.”
Every day, Rosenberg received painful injections to lessen the chance of her having similar episodes. Doctors said there was no alternative, which is why she then started researching alternative therapies. That’s when she found fruitarianism, which suggests obtaining the bulk of one’s calories from fruit. Bananas, dates, papayas, apples, oranges, mango, and more are among the recommended food list fruitarians consume large amounts of.
Incredibly, everything changed upon adopting the strict diet. “I had heard about these crazy insane people who were raw vegans and I thought there was something wrong with them mentally,” she said. “The more I read, the more I heard about people curing diseases and that stuck in my mind. I felt doomed and decided I didn’t have anything to lose.”
The diet switch was made in 2014. Rosenberg traded plates of egg sandwiches for platters of fruits and chicken dinners for gargantuan salads with fruit-based dressings. As is expected, Rosenberg first got sick from the “detox” symptoms. Reportedly, she craved hot meals for weeks. But month after month, the diet got easier.
Within 18 months, Rosenberg shed 80 pounds, dropping to 132 pounds. “I was morbidly obese before and I ended up losing 80lbs, but I don’t look skinny or emaciated. I’m healthy.” Not only did she reach a healthy weight, her acne cleared up, her fatigue disappeared, and she looks much younger.
“I suffered from chronic acne all my life and I had pimples all over my arms and back but it has completely got rid of that,” said Rosenberg.
The diet is very strict. No cooked, seasoned or heated food is allowed. The only exceptions to the fruit diet are lettuce and herbs — they make up the 5 percent of her diet that is not fruit. Some fruitarians also allow small amounts of avocado and nuts or seeds. To stick with the diet, Rosenberg has sacrificed social outings. However, she says it is worth it.
“I used to think people who ate this diet were insane but I took the gamble and it paid off,” she told the press. “When I first transitioned to fruitarianism it was very difficult to get away from cravings for cooked food but within a few weeks I felt cleaner, so I committed to it.”
Unless one acquires their fruit in bulk, a fruitarian diet can really add up. Every week, Rosenberg spends $100 to $150 in groceries. And, she consumes nearly 120 bananas a week, usually in 1.5-gallon smoothies. At meal time, you’ll see Rosenberg slurp down 10 peaches, oranges or apples, an entire watermelon, or a family-sized bag of grapes. Most of her meals usually only feature one fruit (called “mono meals”) to improve digestion.
It’s an intense diet — one that is controversial as there is little science backing it, but Rosenberg says she’s she’s never felt (or looked) better. “I kept feeling better and better and better and by three months I was feeling great,” she said. “I look back at where I was before and realized, ‘Oh my gosh, this is amazing.’ I felt like a zombie before and now I feel fantastic.”
The 33-year-old says the fruit-based diet virtually cured her of MS. She no longer takes pills for medical conditions she battled before, including depression, thyroid inflammation, and high blood pressure. “Now I’m living completely without disease when doctors said I would be battling MS for the rest of my life and I have no need for medication,” said Rosenberg. “I also feel alert and energized. I’m so much happier.”
She added, “The longer I live like this, things just keep getting better. It has completely turned my life around,’ she exclaims. ‘I feel like I’m living for the first time.”
How Fruitarianism Might Help Remedy ‘Disease’
According to naturopath and biochemist Dr. Robert Morse, a fruitarian diet is ideal for healing because it reduces the consumption of allergenic foods, decreases inflammation in the body by expelling “acidosis,” and moves the lymphatic system (the body’s sewer system) which is often times backed up in humans due to weak kidneys and adrenal glands.
The naturopath recommends fasting on various types of fruit (usually one at a time), along with ingesting specific herbs to support systems, such as the gastrointestinal system, thyroid, and adrenals.
