Artist Uses Recycled Wire to Create Stunning Fluid Sculptures of the Human Body
Sometimes, art is about demonstrating the extraordinary beauty of ordinary things. This can be achieved in different ways, for example, by using unexpected media and materials to create artworks or expressing an unusual vision of things through art. Some artists get amazingly creative in giving form to their imagination and some others show incredible persistence mastering their art.
British sculptor Richard Stainthorp has found a remarkable way to show how human emotions manifest through the body language. He creates life-size sculptures of human figures and angels that capture the beauty and fluidity of the human body in a unique way. While the sculptures have no facial features, we easily understand their emotions through their body language.
Stainthorp has been creating wire sculptures since 1996, using discarded metal wires and junk. While wire is really difficult to work with, it is a perfect medium for imitating the curves and muscles of the human body. The artist’s skillful manipulation with this material is exactly what gives his sculptures this incredible fluidity and a sense of movement.
Moreover, Stainthorp says that the challenge to work with such a difficult medium is actually a source of motivation for him, which inspires him to master his art and create more wire sculptures.
“I knew that if I could get a sculpture looking right from all angles then I would have mastered the material, however, 16 years later I am yet to achieve that goal, although I’ve been close at times. It is this challenge that is my ongoing motivation,” he told Bored Panda.
According to his interview with A Plus, Stainthorp gets most of his inspiration from everyday things people do and the way they perceive themselves and their body.
“Almost everything we find exciting in the world, whether it be intellectual or adventure based, usually revolves around how we perceive our own being within a space, and the interactions we involve ourselves with. For each person the center of the universe is yourself, your being, and your body. Everything else is just your reaction to external stimuli,” he explains.
