What could be better than purchasing an organic turmeric supplement or buying an occasional turmeric root, whole, from your local health food store? Growing it yourself, of course!
Curcumin is the most active constituent of turmeric (3-4%curcumin, depends on the species, growth stage and cultivation area of the spice) and it has been shown to have amazing healing properties. Turmeric also contains manganese, iron, Vitamin B6, copper, potassium, and other phytonutrients.

Grow Your Own Turmeric Root Indoors
- Purchase a large (preferably organically grown) turmeric rhizome from your local plant store or health food store.
- Break the large rhizome into several smaller rhizome pieces that have two or three buds on them.
- Fill some pots with rich organic soil, which is lightly moist but well drained. Place them where they will get plenty of daily sun.
- Place the rhizomes spaces several inches apart about two inches below the surface of the soil, with the buds facing up.
- Water the container every two to three days.
- Wait until the rhizomes are fully grown (about 10 months) to harvest.
Harvesting and Preparing Your Turmeric
Once your rhizomes are ready to be prepared for consumption, boil them for about 45 minutes. Allow them to cool, and then dry in a cool place for about a week. Wearing gloves, so that you don’t stain your hands bright orange-yellow, peel the outer layer of the rhizome with a vegetable peeler. You can then grind them up in a food processor or coffee grinder for use in homemade soups, stews, vegetable plates, curries, and more.
Since you are growing your own, be sure to save at least one or two mature rhizomes to repeat the process with, so that you have an endless supply of fresh, health-supporting turmeric.
Also be sure to plant new rhizomes in new, organic soil, and add compost-tea along with minerals is you can to increase the health and potency of your grown plants.
Increase BioAvailability of Your Homegrown Turmeric
Here’s a tip to get the most out of your home-grown turmeric. Add a little pepper to it when you consume it. The compound, piperine in common peppercorns can increase the bioavailability of turmeric by up to 200%!
Also, because you are growing turmeric yourself and harvesting it only when you need it, you will retain the life-force of the plant, making it even more healthy for your body.
