Former Official Claims UN Aid Workers Raped 60,000 People in Last Decade

The UN is the focal point of controversy following allegations that its staff members have raped 60,000 people over the last decade, as well as used their positions to exploit those they were supposed to protect.

The bombshell dossier was handed over to DFID Secretary Priti Patel last year. In the documents, Professor Andrew MacLeod, former chief of operations of the UN Emergency Coordination Centre, asserts that approximately 60,000 people have been raped by UN aid workers over the past decade. The whistleblower also estimates that there are more than 3,300 pedophiles working for the world body’s various agencies. MacLeod claims “predatory” sex abusers specifically target aid charity jobs to get close to women and children who are vulnerable.

The former UN worker says he is not the first whistleblower, just the first to be heard. Those who previously tried to report misconduct and the “endemic’ cover-up were fired. In fact, he likened the extent of the abuse to be on the same scale as the Catholic Church’s.

“There are tens of thousands of aid workers around the world with paedophile tendencies, but if you wear a UNICEF T-shirt nobody will ask what you’re up to,” he said. “You have the impunity to do whatever you want,” said MacLeod. This problem is “endemic across the aid industry across the world. The system is at fault, and should have stopped this years ago.”

The Sun reports that the professor’s 60,000 figure “is based on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s admission last year that UN peacekeepers and civilian staff abused 311 victims in just one 12 month period over 2016.” When the UN was questioned, it admitted that the likely true number of cases reported against its staff is double that, as figures outside of war zones are rarely collated.

According to MacLeod’s estimations, only 1 in 10 of all rapes and assaults by UN staff are reported. He noted that even in Western countries, rape reporting is low at 14 percent. Patel, who has since resigned, accused senior officials at DFID of being part of the cover-up. She claims senior DFID staff tried to talk her out of making a speech about aid workers’ sex abuse. They argued that if she claimed otherwise, it was “over-stepping the mark.”

Britain remains one of the top 10 contributors to the UN budget. As a result, “child rape crimes are being inadvertently funded in part by United Kingdom tax-payer,” said MacLeod. He added,

“I know there were a lot of discussions at senior levels of the United Nations about ‘something must be done’ but nothing effective came of it, and if you look at the record of whistleblowers, they were fired. We are looking at a problem on the scale of the Catholic Church — if not bigger.”

Senior Tory MP Conor Burns called for the Professor to be listened to “very seriously.” 

“I believe that there has been systematic, organised and covered-up activity going on over many, many years,” he said.

Despite Patel’s serious allegations, an investigation has not yet been launched.
