(TMU) — While the world’s attention is fixed on Australia’s out-of-control bushfire crisis, the people of the Philippines are being gripped by the unfolding of a new natural disaster—the eruption of the Taal Volcano.

The volcano, which lies about 37 miles (60 kilometers) south of the heavily-populated capital of Manila on the island Luzon, erupted on Sunday, spewing ash up nine miles (14 km) into the air, darkening skies, and filling awe-struck locals with terror as lava streams gushed from the volcanic vent.

The eruption prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to escalate its warning system from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 4, signaling that a “a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.”

While Taal Volcano isn’t massive it is considered one of the world’s most deadly volcanoes primarily owing to the heavily-populated region surrounding it, volcanologist Erik Klemetti told CNN.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that there are two zones of concern surrounding the volcano. Over 459,000 people live within the 8.7-mile (14-km) radius around the volcano while over 930,000 people live in the wider 10.5-mile (17-km) zone. Now authorities have ordered a “total evacuation” of millions of people lying within the 17-km (10.5-mile) zone.

While the prospect of the volcano’s explosion has filled locals and visitors with dread, some have still managed to snap some amazing photos of the eruption and its aftermath which illustrate the Earth’s awesome power like nothing else imaginable.

Here are some of the most brilliant images shared on social networks following the eruption of Taal Volcano.

Rare Volcanic Lightning last night caused by Taal Volcano eruption. This image is a stacked/blend of 10 seperate 30 seconds long exposure. There are still a lot of people in need of help there. Most especially, those people living near the volcano affected by heavy ashfall. I'm using this post, via followers and hashtag to reach out to those people who are able or willing to help/donate. There are a lot of people in the evacuation centers that needs foods, mask and clothes. If you want to help, you can message me and I will send you a list of people and their contact numbers and bank accounts or groups/organization that may I know of and are currently accepting donations. January 12, 2020. After our hike in Nasugbu, we heard the news from facebook that Taal erupted that afternoon. On our way there, we thought it was fake news. Well apparently it was true. We had lunch in a spot where we can see the volcano and these are the shots we took that afternoon. It was quite an experience. Its not everyday you see this kind of activity plus the fact that we were supposed to hike that volcano on the same day. Thank God we did not! Praying for those affected and hopefully we get to spread the love. In your own little way, please help the evacuees. Everything happened so fast so it was really unexpected. Hoping you could open your hearts to help and keep on praying for everybody’s safety.🙏🏽 #taalvolcano #philippines #weekend #prayers #taal #awareness #unexpected #united #experience #photogram #memorable #oneforthebooks #volcano #eruption #helpingothers #sunday #wild #instagram #news #ig_philippines #instanature #tagaytay #nature #view
