35 Breathtaking Photos That Show the Terrifying Power of the Philippines’ Taal Volcano Eruption
Behold: the eruption of the Taal Volcano.
(TMU) — While the world’s attention is fixed on Australia’s out-of-control bushfire crisis, the people of the Philippines are being gripped by the unfolding of a new natural disaster—the eruption of the Taal Volcano.
The volcano, which lies about 37 miles (60 kilometers) south of the heavily-populated capital of Manila on the island Luzon, erupted on Sunday, spewing ash up nine miles (14 km) into the air, darkening skies, and filling awe-struck locals with terror as lava streams gushed from the volcanic vent.
The eruption prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to escalate its warning system from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 4, signaling that a “a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.”
While Taal Volcano isn’t massive it is considered one of the world’s most deadly volcanoes primarily owing to the heavily-populated region surrounding it, volcanologist Erik Klemetti told CNN.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that there are two zones of concern surrounding the volcano. Over 459,000 people live within the 8.7-mile (14-km) radius around the volcano while over 930,000 people live in the wider 10.5-mile (17-km) zone. Now authorities have ordered a “total evacuation” of millions of people lying within the 17-km (10.5-mile) zone.
While the prospect of the volcano’s explosion has filled locals and visitors with dread, some have still managed to snap some amazing photos of the eruption and its aftermath which illustrate the Earth’s awesome power like nothing else imaginable.
Here are some of the most brilliant images shared on social networks following the eruption of Taal Volcano.
