(TMU) – The controversial US Space Force has sent out its first official deployment of troops, but it appears that their mission is not related to space travel. Instead, the deployed troops are said to be helping out with “combat operations” in the Middle East, confirming predictions from many anti-war activists that the Space Force was just a new extension of the military-industrial complex. The only difference is that the Space Force will be using space-based technology for war efforts on the ground.
Twenty airmen assigned to the 16th Expeditionary Space Control Flight and the 609th Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, transferred into the military’s newest branch during enlistment or oath of office ceremonies earlier this month, according to a press release from the agency.
“Those participating in today’s ceremony are not only joining our nation’s newest service, they are joining this service while deployed in defense of our nation. They are the first members of the United States Space Force to be deployed in support of combat operations,” US Air Force Col. Todd Benson, director of Space Forces for US Air Forces Central Command said in the press release.
Space Force members will be offering their expertise with satellite technology and space-based weaponry.
The press release said that the soldiers who were deployed can expect to be “watching technology and tactics evolve as the U.S. rises to thwart adversary efforts.”
Senior Airman Aron Franks, of the 16th Expeditionary Space Control Flight, said that he will be acting as a space systems operations specialist who will be tasked with “geo-locating, characterizing and reporting sources of electromagnetic interference to U.S. satellite assets.”
“It’s rewarding when you get to see how your efforts are being processed or applied to the overall fight, to see our piece of the puzzle,” he said.
Tech. Sgt. Cody Hircock, superintendent of the 16th said that this has been in the making for a long time.
“Back when I joined my first unit in 2009, I actually got to watch them launch our third satellite. Now, they have 10, so their capabilities have expanded. It’s been really impressive to see how much space — and the need for space — has expanded,” he said.
In previous comments about the Space Force, US President Donald Trump promised that the agency would be involved in the creation of a “super duper“ missile.
It is likely that the Space Force will be dealing with far more military missions than explorations. During the signing ceremony back in December, Trump defended the new government agency against criticism, saying that “space is the world’s newest war-fighting domain.”
The Space Force is also officially a branch of the US Armed Forces. More specifically, the new agency is connected with the Air Force, Coast Guard, the Army, and the Marine Corps. The agency is replacing an existing military space program called Air Force Space Command, which was founded in 1982.
The Space Force describes itself as “a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space.”
