Spectacular ‘Super Pink Moon’ Rising Monday Will Be the Biggest and Brightest of 2021

Stargazers are in for a treat, as the coming week will kick off with skies illuminated by a big and brilliant Pink Supermoon.

The first full supermoon of this year will kick off around Sunday night and will continue to fill our skies with light until Wednesday, depending on where in the globe you happen to be located.

However, the Pink Moon will reach its most spectacular point on the evening of Monday, April 26.

The moon will be visible following sunset before reaching peak illumination at 11:33pm, EDT.

This Pink Moon will be the first of two this year. The term “supermoon” is a reference to a new or full moon that is at its closest approach to Earth in its orbit. As a result, our lunar satellite will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of the year.

However, despite its name the moon won’t be rosy-hued in color. Instead, it will be its typical golden hue.

Farmers Almanac explains that this phenomenon is named after the first spring flowers that cover the ground like a pink carpet, called Wild Ground Phlox or Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata). Native to North America, these flowers typically bloom during April’s full moon.

“For the best view of this lovely spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon rises just above the horizon,” the Farmers Almanac noted.

This gorgeous and unbelievable sight will truly be a wonder to behold, so mark your calendars. And if cloud cover won’t allow you to see the first supermoon of the year, the next one will take place on May 26!
