If the global premiere ofThe Whale on Sunday night at the Venice Film Festival is any indicator, Brendan Fraser’s comeback to Hollywood will be received with a lot of shouts, but many more emotions will be had.

After the final scene of the drama directed by Darren Aronofsky, in which Brendan Fraser portrays a gay man who weighs 600 pounds and is restricted to a wheelchair, the actor was overwhelmed with emotion.

Throughout the duration of the standing ovation, which lasted for six minutes, Fraser wept, which is sure to propel him to the forefront of the competition for best actor at this year’s Oscars.

During the film’s emotionally taxing conclusion, a good number of other people in the cinema pulled out their handkerchiefs as well.

During the standing ovation, Fraser gave Aronofsky multiple hugs.  At one point, he made an attempt to exit the theater; however, the volume of the audience’s applause was so intense that he remained for a longer period of time and bowed.

Sadie Sink, who rose to prominence in “Stranger Things,” plays supporting lead role of Fraser’s daughter, who is 17 years old. In “The Whale,” Fraser plays a dad who attempts to bond with his daughter and lives with extreme debilitating obesity. In addition, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins are included in the supporting cast. Aronofsky’s film is an adaptation of the play with the same name written by Samuel D. Hunter, who also modified the play’s stage script for the motion picture.

Fraser wore a prosthetic suit that added anywhere from fifty to three hundred additional pounds depending on the scene in order to play the main character in the movie. In order to truly morph into the role, the actor would spend up to six hours every day in the makeup chair.

During an interview that took place before the premiere of the film in Venice, Brendan Fraser stated that his prosthetic suit was “cumbersome and not exactly comfortable.”

“The torso piece was almost like a strait jacket with sleeves that went on, airbrushed by hand, to look identical as would human skin, right down to the hand-punched hair,” he added.

“I developed muscles I did not know I had,” Fraser told journalists at the Venice press conference about wearing the prosthetic suit. “I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being.”

Variety notes that Aronofsky, who has a long and fruitful relationship with the famous Venice Film Festival, is about to make a splash once again with the premiere of his latest film, “The Whale.” Although he had a rough start with the debut of “The Fountain” at his first Venice Film Festival, he was able to redeem himself in 2008 when “The Wrestler” was awarded the Golden Lion. While “mother!” was the talk of the town at the 2017 Venice Film Festival, “Black Swan” was one of the huge blockbusters at that year’s festival and earned Mila Kunis an award for best performance by an actress in a supporting role as an emerging talent.

We at The Mind Unleashed are excited to see this movie and even more excited for the “Brennaisance.” Our boy is back!
