Millionaire Wrecks $750,000 Porsche Driving on Drugs Through Deserted NYC Streets

(TMU) — Millionaire Benjamin Chen destroyed his $750,000 Porsche Mirage GT supercar while driving high on drugs through the abandoned streets of downtown Manhattan, New York on Tuesday. The crash happened at around 7:30 am and the scene was captured on security camera footage as well as cell phone footage taken by onlookers who witnessed the action.

After smashing into a van in front of several bystanders, Chen attempted to drive away in his mangled car but didn’t make it very far. Police quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the 33-year-old on charges of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. It is not clear what drugs he was using at the time, as he was not charged with possession. It is likely that nothing was found on him.

Chen hit at least five unoccupied vehicles that were parked along 11th Avenue on the west side of Manhattan. He attempted to flee, but only made it to 44th street, just north of the Javits Center, where he eventually came to a stop and waited for police.

The car that Chen wrecked is a Porsche Mirage GT, which as an elite group of supercars based on the iconic Porsche Carrera GT. Only 25 of these cars exist in the entire world, and they are all fully customized to the owner’s personal specifications. It takes the company about 1,000 hours to complete each of the 25 cars.

According to a press release from the NYPD:

“On Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at approximately 0730 hours, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of West 44 Street and 11 Avenue, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct. Upon arrival officers observed a 33-year-old male operator and sole occupant of a 2014 Porsche Gemballa Mirage GT conscious and alert. Further investigation revealed that the operator of vehicle #1 struck the rear of a parked unoccupied vehicle #2 and fled southbound on 11 Avenue in his Porsche The motorist proceeded to strike vehicles #3, 4 and 5 that were also parked and unoccupied in the vicinity of West 44 Street where his vehicle came to a rest. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.”

According to the Drive, at least three six-figure supercars have been destroyed by Chen over the years, and there are rumors in the luxury car scene that he has crashed even more than that. Chen is reportedly a venture capitalist who inherited multiple companies including an investment firm from his billionaire parents.

Chen is also a former co-owner of Gold Rush Rally, an annual multi-state race for supercar owners. He was a co-owner of the Gold Rush and heavily involved with the race until he sold his shares in the event last year.

Speeding has increased across New York as the traffic has disappeared since the social distancing orders began. However, speeding cameras have still been in operation and have caught about 181,000 drivers between March 5 and March 24.
