Stunning Statues of a Man and Woman Passing through Each Other Tell a Touching Love Story

Georgian sculptor Tamara Kvesitadze has created a stunning installation named ‘Man and Woman,’ also known as the ‘Statue of Love.‘ It was designed in 2007 but was installed only in 2010 in the seaside city of Batumi, Georgia. The installation consists of two 8 meter (26 foot) tall figures and is made of steel discs.

Except for its impressive size and design, the ‘Statue of Love’ has something else, no less amazing, to offer to its viewers – the two figures are kinetic. Every day at 7 p.m. of the local time, the massive Man and Woman start to slowly move towards each other until they merge together.

After that, they pass through one another and eventually find themselves facing in opposite directions.

Moreover, there is a tragic love story behind this ingenious installation, which is no less sad than the one of Romeo and Juliet. It is based on the 1937 novel by Azerbaijani author Kurban Said titled “Ali and Nino,” in which a Muslim boy Ali and a Christian Georgian princess Nino fall in love with each other. However, the differences in their cultural and religious backgrounds create a lot of obstacles for them, and the loving couple eventually gets separated forever by the invasion of Soviet Russia.

While the installation was inspired by the story about Ali and Nino, it could actually remind many of us of our failed relationships. The emotional spectacle of the two statues depicts how the life cycle of a relationship often goes – two people meet and slowly get to know each other better until they plunge into passion and affection but eventually end up growing apart and separating from one another.
