The Better.com CEO who earned international infamy as a result of his pre-Christmas mass firing of 900 workers over Zoom is now facing internal blowback from the “cruel” action, as well.

In the days since Vishal Garg sacked the 900 workers, three of the company’s top communications executives – public relations head, Tanya Gillogley, marketing head Melanie Hahn and communications VP Patrick Lenihan – have each resigned, according to various media reports.

The fallout is just a part of the widespread backlash against Garg, who has been accused of insincerity, callousness and cruelty since he resorted to the one-way Zoom webinar to lay off some 9% of the mortgage lender’s staff, reports CNN.

On the call, Garg said: “This isn’t news that you’re going to want to hear … If you’re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off. Your employment here is terminated effective immediately.”

Garg has since been scrambling to control the damage from the call, which quickly earned him and his company negative press from people across the globe. In a Dec. 7 letter addressed to staff, Garg admitted that his handling of the firings made “a difficult situation worse.”

“I failed to show the appropriate amount of respect and appreciation for the individuals who were affected and for their contributions to Better,” Garg wrote.”I own the decision to do the layoffs, but in communicating it I blundered the execution. In doing so, I embarrassed you.”

The move also came after the digital lender announced it received some $750 million as an amendment of its agreement with blank check company Aurora Acquisition Corp. and SoftBank, reports TechChrunch.

Since the firings, Garg has told the company that he hopes his company can emerge as a “Better 2.0,” boasting in a leaked recording that the lender will have a “leaner, meaner, hungrier workforce.”
