This Woman Kept Getting Catcalled, So She Started Taking ‘Selfies’ With The Perpetrators [15+ Pics]

As a woman, it can be incredibly uncomfortable to walk down the street and have a barrage of statements sail toward you. They can range from “Hey, baby, what are you doing” to “Hey there, foxy mama” and not one is less demeaning than the other.

Unfortunately, few men understand this and believe that if a woman looks attractive, she is (of course) seeking attention. Not only is this societal attitude offensive (toward people of all genders), it can be dangerous, as well. In the United States, up to 1.3 million women are raped every year, according to the CDC. Sometimes, incidences start out with a catcall.

Tired of being catcalled herself, a brave activist decided to take selfies with the perpetrators. 20-year-old Noa Jansma, who is a student in Amsterdam, took photos with every single creep who harassed her during the month of September. She then uploaded them to Instagram. In the caption, she included the comments they made. And trust us, they will make your skin crawl.

By juxtaposing the catcallers’ unashamed grins and the ridiculous statements they made to her, Jansma shows how frequent, real and disturbing these experiences are for women everywhere. As Bored Panda reports, she also gained power over them by documenting their actions and putting them on display for the whole world to see (and judge).

Though the experiment ended, Jasma has now opened the @dearcatcallers Instagram page for submissions. Her hope is to raise awareness about this trend as well as inspire dialogue in hopes of creating global change.

In the Netherlands, catcalling will be punishable by law as of January 1st, 2018. Reportedly, violates will face fines of up to 190 euros ($220). Perhaps more nations will pass similar legislation if Jansma’s project goes viral.
