Kim Kardashian Pays 5 Years of Rent for Man Denied Housing After Prison Release

Think what you’d like about Kim Kardashian-West. The social media influencer, who is perhaps best known for her bodacious booty, is also an advocate for judicial reform. This was made evident when she paid for five years of rent on behalf of Matthew Charles, a former inmate who was released from prison as a result of recent criminal justice reform.

In December of 2018, the First Step Act was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support. The act reduces federal prison sentences for nonviolent offenders, like Charles. Though he had to spend over 20 years in jail, the former inmate is now a free man. And, thanks to Kardashian-West, he has five years of free rent ahead of him.

GoodNewsNetwork reports that in 1996, Charles was convicted of drug charges. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, 20 of which he served. In 2018, a judge deemed his conviction “unfair.” Shortly after he was released, however, Charles went back to prison for a second time. But, thanks to the legislation’s approval, he regained his freedom in early January.

Because of his criminal background, Charles has not been able to receive approval on any of his housing applications. When Kardashian-West heard about his situation, she reached out to the former inmate and offered to cover his rent.

“Kim reached out privately to Matthew yesterday after hearing he was having a hard time getting approved for an apartment and has generously offered to pay five years of his rent,” Tim Hardiman, a senior producer at CMT in Nashville, told US Weekly. “He was overwhelmed by Kim’s offer and graciously accepted.

“Her generosity will allow him to save enough money to eventually put a down payment on a house. It’s truly changed his life,” Hardiman added.

To thank Kim, Charles made a public Facebook post praising the social media starlet for her generosity. He added:

“Kim did not do this for attention or publicity, but I had to share it, because it’s too good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me.”

Kardashian-West has not issued a formal statement about the kind gesture. However, Kardashian-West herself has indicated that she worked with California Gov. Christopher Newsom (D) to end the state’s death penalty.
