Girl Born With Backward Legs Walks for the First Time Thanks to Strangers Funding Surgery

Meet Victoria Komada, a special 3-year-old who was born with both of her legs bent backwards. The “one-in-a-million” little girl was born with a congenital deformity known as bilateral tibial hemimelia. As GoodNewsNetwork reports, the condition results in deformed legs and missing bones. Thankfully, Victoria can now walk—and it’s all thanks to strangers who helped fund a “miracle” surgery.

When Victoria was born, the doctors told the infant’s family that the only solution was a double amputation. But, her parents weren’t ready to give up. They searched until they found a surgeon in Florida who said he could reconstruct one of her legs. The family was elated. But there was just one problem: a £180,000 ($235,000) price tag.

Victoria’s family had no option but to ask for help. And amazingly, thousands of people answered he call. In July 2018, enough money was raised to transport the Komada family to the United States from their home in Norwich, England. The family flew to the Paley Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida. There, Dr. Dror Paley explained that Victoria’s left leg could be fixed. Her right leg, however, had to be fitted with a prosthetic.

The operation lasted nine hours and Victoria came through splendidly. Several months later, after countless hours of treatments and therapies, Victoria underwent a second operation in November 2018 so that the bones in her left leg could be fused together. Two days later, she could walk.

The family is now back at their home in Norwich. After nine months of treatment and two operations, Victoria can now walk, run, and play sports like other children. “Of course I was so scared and didn’t know what would was going to happen,” said Marzena, Victoria’s mom. “[But] every week, she got better and better and now she is not in any pain at all. She can now walk normally and we can all start our life again now we are home.”

“We were so happy when she took her first steps, we started crying. We were on the way to the car and she said ‘Mummy, can I show you something.’”

Dr. Paley delivered what he promised. After the surgery, he said:

“We achieved all that we said we would achieve for her. The reconstructed leg is very functional. She can walk and run and do sports now. She has had superb results.”

Victoria will start school begin school in September and, thanks to the kindness of strangers, she will be able to play with her classmates and enjoy the vast perks of being a kid.
