Watch the Terrifying Moment a North Carolina KFC Explodes
No injuries have been reported as a result of the blast, which was felt by residents over two miles away.
(TMU) — Newly released surveillance video shows the terrifying moment a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant exploded in Eden, North Carolina.
The incident, which took place shortly after midnight on Thursday, was captured on the security camera of Eden Drug, which sits across the street from where the KFC stood.
“We’ve actually searched the building and no one is inside the building which is great,” said Eden Police Chief Greg Light.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the blast, however, almost all neighboring businesses were damaged, according to police.
The explosion was felt by residents over two miles away, local news station WGHP noted. The moments following the blast were pure panic as neighbors, unsure of the origin of the boom that echoed throughout their community, feared for their life.
“There was smoke everywhere, debris laying everywhere….It felt like it was right up under the house, like it was going to lift it up,” one resident told FOX 8.
Employees told police officers that they smelled gas in the restaurant as they were closing the night before the explosion and that the manager attempted to turn off the nozzle before calling and alerting the gas company of the odor.
Officials say they have not yet determined the cause of the explosion.
