20+ Illustrations That Highlight the Harsh Realities of Modern Society

If history has taught us anything, it’s that humans are greatly flawed. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in the 21st century. In fact, it seems technology is increasing the pace of society, inadvertently fueling a “frenzy” mentality. Even worse, conundrums our species sought to overcome in the past (world hunger and conflict, to name a few) are persistent as ever.

The downfalls of modern society become increasingly evident when scrolling through Spanish illustrator Rafael Alvarez’s artwork. As Bored Panda reports, Alvarez portrays scenarios many people might find familiar. However, his technique is to highlight an angle few people consider. And, that angle is usually quite shocking.

Like many artistic activists, Alvarez is hoping to “stun” the public awake with his mind-opening illustrations. After all, if one blindly accepts their reality without questioning the “how’s” and “why’s” of life, then one is, in fact, a sheep. As cute as sheep might be, they are more likely to fall in line without question versus work hard to create a better, healthier world.

Alvarez’s illustrations inspire each of us to ask the questions, “Will I be a sheep?” Or, “will I roar like a lion and demand more than the status quo?”
