Matthew McConaughey Celebrates 48th Birthday By Handing Out 4,500 Turkeys To Strangers
Most people want to be catered to on their birthdays. They expect a big party, hundreds of balloons, gifts to commemorate their “big day,” and a guest list a mile long. What did Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey want for his recent birthday? To hand out turkeys to strangers — 4,500, to be exact.
On November 4, 2017, the good Samaritan turned 48-years-old. Rather than make the day all about himself, he spent hours handing out Thanksgiving centerpieces to people in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
Little Things reports that in total, the Wolf of Wall Street actor handed out 4,500 turkeys to families in the area. Fortunately, he had help in the form of 250 volunteers! The good deed was part of a charity initiative spawned by Wild Turkey Distillery. It was called Wild Turkey Gives Back.
The Kentucky business produces it bourbon whiskey at a facility near Lawrenceburg. In 2016, McConaughey was hired to be the creative director and celebrity spokesman for one of the company’s campaigns.
The heartwarming day was captured in a Facebook live video. In it, McConaughey says,
“Thanksgiving, gratitude, we believe in our family that the more you’re thankful for, the more that you show gratification, the more that you’re gonna create in your life to be thankful for. Let’s go make some people happy, put some smiles on some faces, deliver some turkeys. There’s some people that are gonna be happy to get ’em.”

Later, he shared a second video of himself delivering a free turkey to a group of women who introduced themselves as the “hot mamas.”

This isn’t the first time the How To Get A Guy In 10 Days actor has donated his time to charity. With his wife, Camila, the two founded the Just Keep Livin’ Foundation. The non-profit “is dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future.” The charity also seeks to transform children into good people through “programs that teach the importance of decision-making, health-mental, physical, and spiritual – education, and good all-around active living.”
The actor also signed a wooden dog bone for an auction benefiting the Mississippi Animal Rescue League.
There are many controversial points to McConaughey’s activism. Some people will undoubtedly attack the dispersing of turkeys, as they disagree with eating animals. Others might degrade McConaughey’s character, as he could easily donate money and perhaps make more of a difference.
What we at The Mind Unleashed hope you take away from this article is an appreciation for action. It’s easy to throw money around, but few people actually devote their time to connecting and helping others. The most important takeaway should be that the actor was inspired to improve others’ lives on his birthday. That’s commendable.
