‘Unicorn’ Dog Has One Ear in the Middle of Her Head

The nickname ‘Unicorn’ came naturally.

(TMU) — A golden retriever puppy named Rae was born to be a star in spite of—or rather because of—an accidental injury at birth. The traumatic incident required emergency surgery and constant care.

Rae’s damaged left ear was removed at the Family Friends Veterinary Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan where Brianna Aardema was one of her devoted carers and says it was love at first sight.

“The minute I saw her, I knew I wanted to raise her and be there for her even though I knew the road to recovery wouldn’t always be easy,” Brianna a told Good Morning America.

The loss of one ear does not seem to have affected Rae’s hearing and, to everyone’s surprise, as her surgical wound healed, her right ear spontaneously started to “migrate” and finally settled where it found the best spot, right in the middle of her head. The nickname ‘Unicorn’ came as naturally as the ear migrated.

Brianna adopted Rae (ear spelled backwards) soon after they first met and took her home once she was fully recovered where she continued to grow and blossom under the glow of family love.

In February Brianna started the Instagram account goldenunicornrae to share her beloved and unique pup with the world. After a recent video post of Rae on the app TikTok went viral with over 2.5 million views and nearly 500,00 likes, the world wanted more and responded by following Rae on Instagram, where she has over 50 thousand followers and counting.

The outpouring of adoration and love from fans comes as no surprise. Rae was born to be a star after all, and in spite of loads of fans dubbing her a “unipupper,” this sweet beauty seems unfazed by her fame and has her feet firmly planted on the ground.

One person commented on a video, saying: ‘’This is probably the cutest dog I have ever seen. Ever. Love her!’’

Another commented: ‘’THE best pupper to ever exist.”

And yet another: ‘’Adorable! And love your name! It’s the middle name of my mama and my sister.’’

Spot on! Just a few of the thousands of comments sharing the love and we found not a single one we did not agree with.

Rae has officially joined the ranks of another sweet and famous pup named Narwhal, who also made headlines for being extra special.

Last November, the pup was found at a dumpsite in rural Jackson, Missouri, by Mac’s Mission, a non profit whose mission is to help dogs with special needs, in particular. Although declared healthy after initial examination, Narwhal was distinctly different from other dogs as he had what seemed to be a tail on his forehead which reminded his rescuers of the tusk of the Narwhal whale. Needless to say, the name stuck!

X-rays confirmed that the extra “tail,” about one third the length of his actual tail, posed no threat to Narwhal’s health and there was no medical need to have it surgically removed.

A couple of weeks after Narwhal’s story went viral, Rochelle Steffen, founder of Mac’s Mission decided to adopt Narwhal herself, confirming that he was no longer available for adoption. Steffen plans to train Narwhal as a therapy dog.

Mac’s Mission main focus is to help dogs that would usually be first in line to be euthanized because of deformities, clefts, trauma, or injuries and give them a chance to live a good life.

Because their life-saving efforts are strictly grassroots through social media, the attention from Narwhal’s story has been “majorly epic for so many new folks to find out about our little awesome rescue,’’ said Steffen, adding, “We really love our little Narwhal and the others he is helping here with the attention!”

No contest! They are both beautiful and adorable stars.
