In a groundbreaking world first, a 57-year-old man in the U.S. has become the first person in the world to receive a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig.

The revolutionary procedure’s apparent success offers hope to hundreds of thousands of people who are struggling with failing vital organs amid scarce supplies of human organs.

The patient, David Bennett of Maryland, is in good shape days after the experimental seven-hour operation took place in Baltimore on Friday, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The surgical procedure is the result of years of fervent efforts by researchers to develop pigs whose organs would be compatible with the human body, and was made possible by recent advances in gene editing and cloning technology. The heart transplant was preceded months ago by a successful kidney transplant in New York which also used an organ harvested from a genetically engineered pig.

“This is a watershed event,” said David Klassen, chief medical officer at the United Network for Organ Sharing, reports New York Times. “Doors are starting to open that will lead, I believe, to major changes in how we treat organ failure.”

The University of Maryland doctors received a special dispensation from regulators to carry out the procedure due to the fact that Bennett’s death was certain in the absence of a transplant.

Surgeon Bartley Griffith, who took part in the transplant, expressed pride in taking part in bringing the world “one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis,” reports BBC. Roughly 17 people die every day in the U.S. while awaiting transplants, which are in extremely short supply.

“People die all the time on the waiting list, waiting for organs. If we could use genetically engineered pig organs they’d never have to wait, they could basically get an organ as they needed it,” said Christine Lau, Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

“Plus, we wouldn’t have to fly all over the country at night-time to recover organs to put them into recipients.”

In a heartwarming start to the New Year, a pair of California twins were born only 15 minutes apart — in separate years, with one born minutes before midnight on New Year’s Eve in 2021 and the other born at precisely midnight on New Year’s Day in 2022.

Their Mother, Fatima Madrigal, gave birth to her son Alfredo Antonio Trujillo at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday night, according to the Natividad Medical Center, which announced the birth on Sunday.

Alfredo’s sister, Aylin Yolanda Trujillo, was born precisely at midnight in a new year with a different birthdate, just 15 minutes after Alfredo’s brother.

Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family physician at the hospital, described the deliveries as being “uniquely timed” and “one of the most memorable deliveries of my career.”

“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022,” Arias added in the release. “What an amazing way to start the New Year!”

After spending time in the hospital with their mother and father, Robert Trujillo, the two newborns will travel home to meet their three older siblings – two girls and a boy.

Keanu Reeves has had no trouble endearing himself to filmgoers and non-filmgoers alike, even if this is more for his off-screen endeavors than his film roles.

The “Bill and Ted” actor reportedly donated a massive chunk of his earnings from the original “The Matrix” to cancer research, according to LADBible.

In 1991, his younger sister Kim was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of blood cancer that she battled for a decade prior to entering remission.

During that period, Keanu served as her caretaker and put his career on the backburner, even going so far as selling his home so that he could become closer to her and devote his life to assisting her.

Reeves, now 57, was given an up-front payment of $10 million for the 1999 sci-fi classic “The Matrix” before the film smashed box office expectations and earned him an additional $35 million.

Keanu apparently didn’t hesitate to donate 70 percent of his earnings – or the huge sum of $31.5 million – to researching leukemia in hopes of sparing future patients and their families the pain that the Reeves family underwent.

Since then, Reeves has quietly poured his Hollywood earnings into cancer research, even establishing his own private foundation for the purpose.

“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” Reeves told Ladies Home Journal in 2009. “I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”

In 2020, Reeves also auctioned off a 15-minute Zoom date with himself to raise funds for Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer program for children with cancer.

Since his breakout role as an aloof teen headbanger in the 1986 drama “River’s Edge” followed by his iconic performance as the airheaded stoner Theodore “Ted” Logan in the “Bill & Ted’s” films, Keanu has become beloved by audiences.

However, he has since far outgrown his public persona as a simple airhead who says “Whoa” in the SoCal dude-bro accent and is now seen as the quintessential nice guy of Hollywood, who not only doesn’t take himself too seriously but is also distinguished by his big heart and generosity.

December 8th is National Brownie Day, and yesterday the king of all brownies was revealed. Breaking the Guinness Book of World Records, the recently revealed brownie is taking the internet by storm. If you like brownies, incredible feats of baking, and maybe a bit of THC, then the world’s largest pot brownie is just for you!

Massachusetts-based cannabis company MariMed, Inc. is getting ready to launch its edibles bakery brand, Bubby’s Baked. What better way to introduce the world to your edible company, than by baking the world’s largest THC-infused brownie?

MariMed is a “premier seed-to-consumer vertically integrated multi-state operator. The company’s driving mission continues: to improve the lives of people everyday through our products, actions, and values.” and advises people who plan to produce cannabis on design, development, operations, and financing, according to the company’s website.

Just before National Brownie Day, on Tuesday, the company baked a record-breaking treat. Using the same ratios from one of their normal-sized edible brownies, the team amped things up and made a mega-brownie.

Weighing in at a whopping 850 pounds, the massive brownie contains a mindblowing amount of THC too. How much THC, you ask? Well, 20,000 milligrams to be exact.

The massive chocolatey treat measures 3 feet wide and 3 feet, 15 inches tall. The previous record in the Guinness World Records was a mere 243 pounds. Looks like this edible is going to hold the title for quite a while.

Bubby’s Baked fills a big hole in the edibles market that cannabis consumers crave – high-quality, delicious baked goods that stay moist and chewy,” said MariMed Chief Product Officer and SVP/Sales Ryan Crandall. “For many of us, homemade brownies were our first taste of cannabis-infused edibles.”

MariMed, headquartered in Norwood, Massachusetts, saw its craft confectioners use the same ingredients and a similar procedure to making its smaller pot brownies, using all the typical ingredients – flour, butter, eggs, sugar – for the giant one, including the 20,000 milligrams of THC.”

In total, to create the incredible edible, the bakers used: 1,344 eggs, 250 pounds of sugar, 212 pounds of butter, 5.3 pounds of vanilla extract, 81 pounds of flour, two pounds of baking powder, three pounds of salt, and 122 pounds of cocoa powder. Quite the shopping list!

“Bubby’s recreates and elevates that nostalgic experience, infusing full-spectrum, craft-quality cannabis into timeless recipes, for a reliable high reminiscent of simpler times. Strategically, Bubby’s is part of our effort at MariMed to build a house of brands that meets different consumer needs across a diverse range of occasions,” the news release continued.

If you’re wondering where you can find Bubby Baked’s brownies, their confectionary line is available throughout Massachusetts. This includes the MariMed Panacea dispensary in Middleborough. They are expected to hit dispensary shelves in Delaware and Maryland next year, so keep your eyes open for that exciting development!
